PRECISION GARAGE DOORS: A CAUTIONARY TALE: I called Precision Garage Door Service of Raleigh because my garage door (18 months old, new build) started reversing up when ~12 inches off the floor. I was leaving in 2 days on a trip and couldn't leave it open while I was gone. Precision came out promptly and the tech "diagnosed" the problem. He said we had "a perfect storm of small problems" (sounded quite scripted) and he would develop a plan to fix it. He presented 4 options to fix the problem (none of which addressed the door or opener, just the hardware). The options ranged from ~$1100 to ~$2100. Pressed for time, I opted for the $1436 option. The tech then did his "fix". At the end of the $1436 "repair", the problem had not been solved and the doors were still non-functional. The tech then decided he had "misdiagnosed" the problem, and that the opener motherboard was failed and I needed a new opener. He had an opener on his truck that he said they sell for $899, but he could give it to me for an additional $299 upcharge on the initial $1436. I told him that was unacceptable and he should remove the new rollers/springs and put the old ones back on. He the decided to "call his manager". He then offered their $899 opener for free (BTW, this opener sells for $262 at Home Depot, not $900). He swapped it and the door worked fine. At this point I was presented with the itemized bill and it got really interesting. Included was 10 rollers at $35 @. A quick Google Lens check on the item revealed the rollers were $2.50@ on Amazon. So, they charged $350 for $25 worth of rollers. The new spring they installed were billed at $462@, or $858 for the pair. These springs cost $190/pair on Amazon. So, billed $858 for $190 worth of springs. That seems insane, but not compared to the ASF-100 roller bushing that cost $6 at Grainger, they charged me $99 for one. Overall, I was charged $350 + $858 + $99 = $1307 for $221 worth of parts. In case you think these prices reflect an installation charge, not price gouging, I was also charged $129 in labor for the technicians ~2 hours of time. In my opinion, this place is a high cost scam that preys on people that are fed horror stories of what could happen if you don't use their options. My guess is the relatively high Google reviews are from people who don't know any better or are too proud to admit they got scammed. I'm sure wealthy senior citizens are a prime customer target. I will admit, the end product was quite good, just ridiculously overpriced. Do you homework folks, it's always best to look at the 1 and 2 star reviews on Google before selecting a contractor. That's where the dirt lies.
